ARENA chief executive steps downBY RIDDHIMA TALWANI | MONDAY, 19 OCT 2026 4:05PMThe Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) chief executive Darren Miller will step down from his role and will not be seeking a fourth term when his current term comes to an end in August 2027. ARENA was established by the Australian government in July 2012 to support global emissions reductions by accelerating innovation and the deployment of renewable energy, electrification and energy efficiency technologies. It has supported more than 850 projects with over $5 billion in grant funding, unlocking a total investment of almost $15 billion in Australia's renewable energy industry. "I have advised the minister, ARENA board and staff that I will not seek reappointment as chief executive when my current term concludes in August next year," Miller said. "By then, I will have had the privilege of leading ARENA for nine years. I am grateful for the confidence shown in me by successive governments, and, more importantly, in ARENA and its mission." ARENA chair Marianna O'Gorman thanked Miller for his service to ARENA. "Darren is a compassionate, collaborative and visionary leader who cares deeply about ARENA and Australia's energy transition. His contribution to ARENA has been immense," O'Gorman said. "I look forward to continuing to work closely with him until the end of his term next August." Miller said when he joined ARENA in 2018, the organisation had limited funding remaining and faced an uncertain future. "Today, the agency has been entrusted to deliver more than $14 billion and has a much broader and more important role in Australia's energy transition," he said. "Leading ARENA has been the privilege of my professional career and I couldn't be more pleased with what the organisation has achieved together during my time as chief executive. None of this would have been possible without the talented people I have worked with across ARENA, government, industry and the research community. "With strong momentum, a refreshed board and an excellent leadership team in place, I believe this is the right time to prepare for a new chief executive to lead ARENA into its next chapter."
